The California Grill is a popular restaurant among Disney tourists. The high quality of food and service are paired with the restaurant's incredible view.

Perched high atop the Contemporary Resort, a pristine and vibrant restaurant, The California Grill, offers exquisite views of the Magic Kingdom. The dining room is popular among tourists wishing to view the nighttime fireworks from an ideal location. The restaurant focuses on the fresh and colorful flavors of the Pacific coast, bringing diners refined yet fun courses.

The California Grill’s Décor

After checking in on the 2nd floor, diners are escorted to the 15th floor via elevators. The doors open onto a very large, warm and inviting room complete with a stage kitchen where guests can watch the chefs prepare their meals. Neutral tones highlight the tabletops and chairs contrasting dramatically with the splashes of color in the geometric pop-art carpeting. Full, bright windows open to stunning views of the Magic Kingdom and The Seven Seas Lagoon. Perhaps the most popular aspect of the restaurant is its observation deck, where guests can view Wishes, the Magic Kingdom’s fireworks spectacular, complete with piped-in music. The deck is a prime spot for tourists to take in the magic while escaping the crowds that are common in the theme park.

The California Grill’s Clientele

Disney promotes a dress policy for most of its more expensive restaurants (no tank tops or cut-offs). However, sport coats and dresses are not required at the California Grill. Diners arrive in outfits that vary from the casual (dress shorts and a t-shirt), to very dressy. While the tables are full with couples and families with older children, there are still plenty of young children dining here. Guests should not expect a calm and quiet dining experience. In fact, many times children will run to peer out of the windows without regard for the tables around them.

The California Grill’s Service

The California Grill’s service is impeccable. The waitstaff is quick to make recommendations on food and can pair each menu item perfectly with wine from an extensive list. Any food complaints are handled promptly and politely. Though the service is sometimes slow, it is not out of fault. The staff will plan the arrival of courses to make sure the diners are able to experience the fireworks on the observation deck without their food getting cold.

The California Grill’s Food

Because the menu changes frequently, the food at The California Grill is always fresh and in hone with the season. A seared foie gras appetizer with a plum compote is a perfect choice for the late winter, while a lobster risotto with truffle oil is perfect in the summer. The California Grill is also home to arguably the best sushi in central Florida. The yellowfin tuna three ways is commonly on the menu and makes a perfect appetizer or sharing plate. The rolls are very large and can eaten as an entrée. Other noteworthy entrees from past menus include the oak-fired filet of beef with teriyaki barbecue sauce and the grouper fillet in a red wine butter sauce.

Diners should keep in mind that the reservations for the California Grill fill up very quickly. However, tables can be reserved with a credit card up to 180 day before a guest’s arrival (starting October 27th, 2009).
