Visitors can opt to stay in a Walt Disney World Vacation Club (DVC) villa and save money by renting Vacation Club points from DVC owners.

DVC owners who cannot use all of their points in a year often rent points to vacationers seeking reasonably priced accommodations at Walt Disney World. DVC villas range from studio to one, two or three bedroom villas complete with full kitchens, Jacuzzi tubs and washers and dryers.

Booking a Villa

While DVC units can be booked directly through the Disney World Central Reservations Office, it is cheaper to rent a unit from an owner. An owner buys points at a particular resort, which becomes his home resort. Although the owner owns points at that resort, he can use his points to stay at any Disney hotel. A certain number of points are required per night based on the resort and unit size.

Owners decide how much they will charge to rent their points, with points usually renting for $10 - $12 per point. If a potential renter would like to stay for one night in a unit that requires 14 points and the owner is charging $10 per point, the cost would be $140 per night. DVC owners who wish to rent their points often advertise on such websites as Disboards.com and Mouseowners.com.

The DVC owner must make a reservation for the renter. The renter does not have access to the DVC website and can’t discuss the reservation with the DVC Member Services Department. All changes and requests must be made through the owner.

While there have been few reported problems with renting points, renters do have to be careful to ensure that there will be a room for them when they arrive at the resort. The owner should provide a vacation rental contract with deposit amounts, deadlines and cancellations fees clearly explained. He should also provide the renter with his name and telephone number and offer references.

DVC Resorts Offer Varied Themes

There are currently seven DVC resorts in Orlando, each of them offering unique themes. The Animal Kingdom Villas have a private savanna, complete with giraffes, zebras and flamingos that can be viewed from guest balconies. The ocean is the theme at the Boardwalk and Beach Club resorts, located within walking distance to Epcot and Disney Studios. Old Key West and Saratoga Springs are located near Downtown Disney, while the Villas at Wilderness Lodge offer convenient boat transportation to the Magic Kingdom. Bay Lake Tower at the Contemporary Resort is within walking distance of the Magic Kingdom and is on the monorail line.

DVC resorts feature themed pools with slides, hot tubs and pool bars. Villas come complete with a basic set of dishes, utensils and pots and pans. On-site gift stores offer basic groceries and supplies for those guests who want to make a few meals in their villas.
