Key West Accommodations Near Duval Street

Historic Cypress House, an Adult B&B in Key West Old Town, Florida

Apr 7, 2009 Jill Browne

Many tourist accommodations in Key West's Old Town are in old Florida mansions. Historic Cypress House is a quiet, beautiful bed and breakfast near Duval Street.

What to do in Key West? Some like the action on Duval Street, famous for its party atmosphere. Others use Key West as a base for diving, fishing and sailing. History and 19th century architecture buffs will love Key West Old Town.

B&B in Key West Old Town

Cypress House (601 Caroline Street, Key West), a historic property in Old Town, is a luxurious B&B with a charming 19th century feel and all modern conveniences.

The original Key West Old Town is about 190 city blocks radiating from the harbour, including Ernest Hemingway's house.

Listed in the U.S. National Register of Historic Properties since 1971, the designated part of Key West Old Town was expanded in 1983. The Key West Historic District "contains the largest and most important concentration of historic wooden buildings in Florida," according to Historic Resources Survey of Key West, Monroe County, Florida, a 2004 study done by URS Corporation, Inc. for the City of Key West.

Cypress House is Close to Duval Street

Found at the corner of Caroline and Simonton Streets, Cypress House is only a block from Duval Street and two blocks from the waterfront. It's perfect for walkers, close to the Old Town Trolley Tours kiosk, and offers bicycle rentals, too. Cypress House has no on-site parking but has arranged a low daily parking rate at the nearby municipal parkade. Because Old Town is not car-friendly, it's easiest to leave the car there. Cypress House has a convenient loading area right in front of the house on Caroline Street.

Visitors to Key West are surprised by how quiet it is just a block away from Duval Street. The well-decorated, tastefully furnished rooms of Cypress House, are calm, cool, peaceful and private. Cypress House is an adults-only bed and breakfast for guests 16 and over. The property is completed gated and well-screened from the street, adding to the feeling of being away and on vacation.

Pool, Patio, Breakfast and Happy Hour

Cypress House is actually two houses joined by catwalks, and there is a third house (Cypress House Studios) two doors down on Caroline Street. Guests may enjoy the heated outdoor 40-foot lap pool and patio any time. The generous breakfast is served in help-yourself buffet style, with fresh baked goods, fruit, hot and cold items (varies daily, always delicious), juice, and coffee.

During Happy Hour, guests enjoy appetizers and complimentary drinks on the patio.

Bahamas Conch Style Architecture

The main Cypress House on Caroline Street is a wooden "Conch" (pronounced "Conk") style mansion from 1888. The rooms in the main house are larger than in the adjacent Simonton Street house, but all are nicely decorated, with comforts and amenities including ceiling fans, air conditioning, television, guest robes, in-room refrigerators, telephones with voice mail, and free wireless internet. The Simonton Street house and some of the Cypress House Suites have upper level sundecks.

Conch style architecture is cool, light, and airy, well-suited to Key West. The first Conch houses were shipped in pieces from Green Turtle Cay in the Bahamas and assembled in Key West. Cypress House has the typical Conch roofline with verandahs on both the ground floor and the upper floor. It is a charming piece of Key West's living history.

Rates vary seasonally and with the room type. As of July 1, 2008, the range was from $165 to $450 per night (Christmas and Fantasy Fest). Minimum stay required.
