Cruise ship passengers and visitors to Fort Lauderdale can choose from shuttles, taxis, water taxis, the Sun Trolley and rental cars to get around the city and beach.

Fort Lauderdale is easy to navigate no matter which method of transportation is chosen. Although some visitors arrive with their own car, many others arrive by air and must decide how to get around to major attractions, beaches, dining and back to their hotel. Here are some suggestions for getting around in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Fort Lauderdale Airport Transportation

All the major car rental agencies are represented at the airport as are taxis and complimentary hotel shuttles available to take new arrivals to hotels or cruise ships. For a taxi, expect to pay approximately $20 to get from the airport to the cruise terminal; and around $30 to get to the beach hotels.

Cruise Ship Transportation in Fort Lauderdale

Although most cruise lines sell some sort of transfer from the airport to the cruise terminal, consider another option. Go Airport Shuttle is a shared car/van service that takes passengers directly to Port Everglades Cruise Ship Terminal from the Fort Lauderdale Airport. The shuttles leave every 10 minutes, but it is advised to reserve this option ahead of time.

Cost: $11 per person, Florida Limo, 800-244-8242

Car Rental Fort Lauderdale AirportAll the major car rental agencies are represented at the airport at the new Rental Car Center next to Terminal 1. Passengers arriving from other terminals can take the free shuttle to Terminal 1.

Fort Lauderdale Parking

Rates vary widely from public garages to private ones such as hotel parking options. For example the Marriott Beach Place charges $14 per day and the Sheraton Yankee Clipper costs $12 for self parking. And the Cruise Convention Center charges $15 per day for visitors that park their car when they cruise. In addition, there is plenty of metered beach side parking costing around $1 per hour.

Water Taxi: An Inexpensive Way to Get Around

Fort Lauderdale is known as the “Venice of America”, complete with water taxis that ply the New River and Intercoastal Waterway. The route includes 11 stops between Oakland Park Boulevard and Southeast 17th Street along the Intercoastal Waterway, and west along the New River into downtown Fort Lauderdale as far as Las Olas Riverfront. Some of the stops include the Hyatt Regency at Pier 66, the Convention Center, and the Las Olas Riverfront. Tickets can be purchased onboard..

Cost: $13 for unlimited rides all day.

The Sun Trolley: From the Beach to Las Olas Blvd

There are two popular Sun Trolley routes for visitors to Fort Lauderdale. One route starts just outside the Publix store at the Harbor Shops Shopping Mall by the 17th Street Causeway. It passes by the Convention Center and continues on to Beach Place near Las Olas Blvd. The second popular route is the Beaches to Las Olas Route. Starting at Beach Place it continues down the shopping and restaurant lined street of Las Olas Blvd, past the Riverfront and onto the Museum of Discovery & Science.

Cost: $1 per ride.

Hotels with the best transportation options lie between the Harbor Shops Shopping Mall off 17th Street and Beach Place, just north of Las Olas blvd. Guests of hotels near the airport, Hollywood Beach or north Fort Lauderdale Beach will need to rely on taxis or a rental car.
